An initial consultation is the most common initial speech pathology service that children and families will access. The purpose of this 45-minute session is to complete a detailed case history, conduct informal assessment where required, determine if ongoing speech pathology services are required, set goals, and establish a plan for intervention. Based on the child’s age, goals for intervention, and funding stream, an initial consultation may be a parent/carer only session or include both the parent/carer and child.
